My Hand Sanitizer Was Making Me Sick

Homemade Hand Sanitizer

I have never been a big fan of applying chemicals to my body. And I always knew that hand sanitizer was pretty much straight chemicals. Oh sure, adding something pretty like Aloe Vera wasn’t fooling me. And the fact that it dries the heck of my hands was a red flag. After doing some research I realized I was right, my hand sanitizer was not only harmful, it could even be making me sick. So skeptics listen up – here’s how.

First, it kills all bacteria in your body. That’s right – all! So while we want those bad bacterias gone, we so don’t want the good ones out!

Next, I recently read this from an article in Newsweek:

That’s because hand sanitizers (as well as other cosmetic products like hand lotions) contain chemicals the make the skin more permeable to various substances, including BPA, says study author and University of Missouri researcher Frederick vom Saal. The study found that hand sanitizers could increase the absorption of BPA into the body by a factor of 100 or more.

Yep, that’s right, hand sanitizers allow skin to be permeable which means….harmful substances now have access to our bodies!

You do the math – hand sanitizer kills all bacteria in body + hand sanitizer allows our skin to absorb harmful substances which can’t be fought because of no good bacteria being present = SICK me!!

I make my own with an antibacterial essential oil blend (Protective Blend) and fractionated coconut oil in this great blue glass spray bottle. See recipe below. Fits in my purse, my console in my car or anywhere you currently have yours stored.

It is a win-win-win! Because not only does my sanitizer not kill good bacteria, it enhances the body’s natural immune system. Also, no more dry hands because coconut oil is so luxurious! Finally, I am using a product that is safe and natural.

You will recognize me when you are out and about – I am going to be the one skipping the hand sanitizers/soaps in the public bathroom and spraying my way to healthiness!

RECIPE: Hand Sanitizer

  • 1 glass blue or amber spray bottle
  • 2/3 bottle Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 1/3 bottle distilled water (you can distill your water by filling up a glass cup and letting set out for 24 hours!)
  • 10-15 drops Protective Blend

Julie

Hi, I am Julie Hellstrom. Several years ago, I decided to take my health back. Dealing with chronic headaches was interfering with my life. So I went on a journey to start making choices for me and my family. Today I am living a healthier, happy life. Making choices to take control of mine and my family’s health instead of totally depending on a doctor (who asked me each visit what I was allergic to?! Don’t they at the very least read my chart first!?) So here I am paying it forward, sharing what I have learned and do with you, it only feels right!
